Wow, I'm Socially Unacceptable

By Rick Harshman

I'm a casino marketer. Therefore, I know...

Social media is just a fad. A 65-year-old woman won't friend me on Facebook. What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Well, I just had the pleasure of sitting through a seminar by Marcus R. Tewksbury of Alterian entitled, "How to Implement a Social Media Marketing Strategy."

I came to realize that I'm a bit of a social media leper. Ok, maybe that's too harsh. Marcus did a great job outlining his strategy, but what really intrigued me was a video he used by Erik Qualman, Social Media Revolution.

I've listed some of the statistics presented by Erik in his video and want you to ask yourself, "Do I know social media?"

The Statistics Are Staggering:

* In 2010 Generation Y will outnumber Baby Boomers
* Years to reach 50 Million users:
-Radio - 38 Years, -TV-13 Years,
-Internet - 4 Years, -iPod - 3 Years,
-Facebook added 100 million users in less than 9 months
* iPod application downloads hit 1 billion in 9 months
* The fastest growing segment on Facebook is 55-65 year old females
* Generation Y and Z consider email passe
* In 2009 Boston College stopped assigning email address to incoming freshman
* YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world
* If Facebook were a country:
1. China, 2. India, 3. United States, 4. Facebook, 5. Indonesia
* What Happens in Vegas, stays on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter...
